The first CD Luigi Magistrelli and I made together was inspired by colors. Unforgettable Hues is also influenced by color -- this time those suggested by guitar sounds, which are delicate but rich in timber. I think that connoisseurs of clarinet or guitar will be wonderfully surprised by the sounds of this combination. The guitar and one or more clarinets or a basset horn are present in all the pieces. Two of the works were originally written for csakan and guitar and can be adopted for the A clarinet without transposing or changing any notes, already a common practice in the early 19th century. The csakan, a variant of the recorder or the flageolet, is said to have originated in Hungary. The Hungarian csakan was made from metal and was apparently adapted by Austro-Hungarian instrument makers to more closely resemble the West European wooden flageolet. Known then as the cane flute, the csakan was a very popular instrument between 1815 and 1840 in that part of Europe, after which it fell into complete oblivion. Whistling's Handbuch lists about 150 works for or with csakan between 1828 to 1835, thirty of which use guitar.
